Updated statistics show an astonishing 63% of Key Biscayne’s registered voters have either already cast ballots – or are in the process of casting them, just 11 days before election day. Miami-Dade Elections Department Statistics show that registered Democrats continue to outperform Republicans in casting ballots by mail, but Republicans have the edge in early, in-person voting that started Monday.

The statistics show Democrats have returned mail ballots at a higher rate than Republicans, 55% to 47%. But in the first four days of early voting, Republicans accounted for 39% of voters, compared to Democrats at 29%. Some 32% of the early voters had no party affiliation. Overall, 1,057 Democrats have voted, 944 Independents have voted, and 863 Republicans have voted. Some 25 people affiliated with other parties have also voted.

At the early voting location at the Historic Garage near the Vizcaya Museum Thursday, Key Biscayne resident Karen Holmquist cast an early vote in a matter of minutes. “No problems, very fast” she said, proudly displaying her red, white, and blue “I voted” sticker. The Historic Garage site is one of dozens across the County. that are open through Nov. 1.

To some, the level of engagement may not be a surprise given the presidential contest pitting Joe Biden against Donald Trump, but it exceeds historical norms for suburban Key Biscayne, and it’s evidence the barrier island turnout could easily meet — or exceed — the record 80 percent predicted by County officials.

Of 8,080 registered Village voters in Precinct 51 as of 3 p.m. Thursday:

  • 63% of Village voters have either voted early or have been sent a mail ballot
  • 53% of Village voters have requested mail ballots
  • 49% who were issued mail ballots have returned them, either by mail or drop off box.

Some 794 people have cast ballots at early voting locations, or about 10% of the Key Biscayne electorate.
