Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Key Biscayne’s Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie to the Florida Board of Education Friday. Dr. Christie, a radiologist, is currently the senior policy advisor for the Catholic Association

The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. The board is a 7-member panel that oversees the Florida Department of Education. It directs public K-12 and community college education, including capital outlays and learning standards. It also appoints the commissioner of education.

The board was in news headlines earlier this year when its members voted to sanction Miami-Dade and other school districts for requiring masks.

Dr. Christie, a mother of five, said she has been deeply involved in education for 25 years. Locally, she served on the Home and School Association at St. Agnes Academy.

Christie said she looks forward to making education more effective in Florida. “All should receive the education they deserve.”

Christie is a frequent writer and broadcaster on faith and science from a conservative perspective and has been critical of what she has described as “woke” culture. She was a speaker at the National March for Life rally in 2015 on the National Mall.
