Nicolas Lopez-Jenkins, who works selling insurance, was the first to file to run for Village Council on Wednesday.
Jenkins, 51, said he is running to “provide a fresh perspective” on issues to“ensure the next generation will have the same amazing experience he has had living in Key Biscayne.” It would be his first run for elective office.
Lopez-Jenkins’ father, Jose Lopez, worked as a consultant for the Village of Key Biscayne on stormwater issues.
Three council seats are up for grabs this year. The incumbents, Ed London, Ignacio Segurola, and Luis Lauredo, have not indicated whether they are running for re-election. Lopez-Jenkins submitted some of his paperwork ahead of the formal filing period for the office of council member, which starts Aug. 15.
Ten people ran for three open seats during the last council election in 2020. Voters will be asked to consider a primary system for future council elections.
The mayoral filing period is underway and closes June 17.
