The paddleboard of the 29-year-old Key Biscayne resident who was last seen leaving a home Monday evening on his way to paddleboard near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park has been found.

The paddleboard was found far offshore 8 to 11 miles between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, according to a post by the U.S Coast Guard on X, formerly Twitter. The boater also found a “dry bag belonging to the overdue paddleboarder,” the post added.

Key Biscayne Police Chief Frank Sousa said a boater who had seen the news about the vigorous helicopter and boat search for Luciano Mercenari found the paddle board on Tuesday evening.

Sousa said he received word via the Coast Guard around 1 a.m. Wednesday that the paddle board had been located, but Sousa did not have details or where or when the paddle board was discovered. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is following up, he added.

“We’re gonna continue investigating this and doing the search and hoping for the best,” Sousa said.

Heavy thunderstorms forced the search for Mercenari to halt late Tuesday; however, it was expected to get back up at first light on Wednesday.

“We’re gonna continue our efforts. We have a lot of resources dedicated to this. And we’re hoping for a good outcome,” he said.
