Readers: Over the last week, the Village of Key Biscayne entered a whirlwind of news about the criminal investigation into former gymnastic coach Oscar Olea. The Independent was there to cover it every step of the way.

They provided police vivid details – often horrific – alleging how as teenage girls they were groomed and then lured into sexual relationships by Key Biscayne gymnastic coach Oscar Olea more than a decade ago.

Oscar Olea, a longtime gymnastic coach on Key Biscayne, has been charged with two counts of sexual battery, police said Wednesday. According to the arrest warrants, the charges involve two different women. 

On Thursday, he was ordered held without bond by a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge.

Miami criminal law expert David S. Weinstein said prosecutors are adept at bringing cases of sexual assault even when victims come forward years later, speaking on newly-filed charges  against a Key Biscayne gymnastics coach. 

“Children are very reluctant to come forward to begin with. There’s a whole grooming aspect that goes on,” said Weinstein, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in Miami. “They become prey to these defendants  as to what’s going on. And so unfortunately, it takes time.”

A day after the Village encouraged a neighborhood watch group to form, a family that runs a well-known martial arts studio planted the seeds.
