Village moves towards less expensive sea level rise plan
With a $310 million estimate in front of them, Key Biscayne leaders are scaling back an ambitious plan to address sea level rise with miles of pressurized pipes, pumping stations, and raised roads.The storm water plan used a set of targets and assumptions – adopted last year – about rainfall, sea level rise, and how much street flooding island residents would tolerate.On Thursday, the Village’s consultant said by using different models and by limiting the time frame to 2040 instead of 2060, the amount of runoff water needed to be removed could be reduced by as much as 23%. Alleged Key Biscayne bicycle thief was on probation for DUI manslaughter
An alleged bicycle thief who targeted the Commodore Club condominium was on probation for a 2017 DUI manslaughter in the death of a Lyft driver and a host of other felonies, records show.Nicholas James Castelao, 41, of Hialeah, was released from prison sentence in February. Police say he fled the Commodore Club complex on Oct. 3 after security recognized him as a suspect in another bike theft two days earlier. The security guard flagged down Key Biscayne Police Sgt. Gus Padron and Castelao surrendered, according to the arrest report. Read more.

The City of Miami commission slashed potential bond funding to renovate a languishing Miami landmark on Thursday, but the city seems to be inching closer towards revitalizing what was once a major marine attraction. The Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key — designed by Cuban architect Hilario Candela and built in the 1960s to host powerboat races — has been in a state of disrepair for decades. The structure was declared unsafe and was closed to the public after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and has since become a magnet for graffiti and vandalism. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. Arguments over the vision for the stadium and funding snafus have long stalled efforts to renovate the aging structure. Read more.

Give Miami Day is the biggest day of generosity for Miami of the year, a community-wide fundraiser for every single nonprofit group for Greater Miami. The big day is Nov. 16 but the donation window actually opens three days earlier on Nov. 13.“You should not be alive in Miami this week and not finding your cause and giving back,” said Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, CEO and President of The Miami Foundation, on the Anti-Social podcast.“We want everyone who lives to be involved and engaged in shaping the future of Miami.” Read more.

Can AI make better weather predictions? UM is giving a look 
Scientists are looking at the latest advance in computer science – artificial intelligence to better predict mammoth hurricanes, raging wildfires and increased coastal flooding e. Professor Ben Kirtman at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel school is leading the AI effort with three new federal grants totaling more than $3 million. The grants are from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and will be used to improve predictive analytics on three fronts.
