KBI Update

March 25, 2024

Good afternoon, readers: The Afterlife musical festival at Miami Marine Stadium caused chaos on the Rickenbacker Causeway, keeping residents from reaching their home for hours. Our readers’ poll showed readers favor a ban on all micromobility devices and for the police to enforce existing laws to keep them off the sidewalks.

On the lighter side, we took a ride with Freebee and and visited with two local Olympic hopefuls in swimming.

And we send a few minutes with Retro Bill, a one-man dynamo who helps fight bullying.

Traffic chaos reigned Wednesday night as concertgoers jumped out of rideshares or abandoned their cars, hoofing it across the Rickenbacker Causeway to get to the Afterlife electronic music festival at Miami Marine Stadium.

As a result,  traffic – once again – ground to a halt, stranding Key Biscayne residents just trying to get home, taking them up to two hours to get to their door. Other residents turned around and found places to spend the night, whether it be a hotel room, a friend or a relative.

Nearly nine out of ten survey participants said e-bikes and scooters should remain banned from sidewalks in Key Biscayne when officials consider permanent rules for the micro mobility device.

The result in a reader survey by The Key Biscayne Independent was the clearest indicator that an emergency “scooter ban” appears to have broad community support. More than 200 readers completed the survey, which asked about the different options facing elected officials.

Gaining the ability to regulate the busy thoroughfare would allow the Village to have a comprehensive law on the battery-powered devices island-wide.
