The Miami Herald reporters who broke the story about allegations of sexual abuse by a Key Biscayne gymnastic coach say multiple parents told them how they decided to stay to monitor their child’s gymnastic lessons out of concern.

“Because of the rumors, (they) decided to stay during their children’s gymnastics lessons to watch with their own eyes and make sure that he wasn’t doing anything they felt uncomfortable with,” investigative reporter Clara-Sophia Daly said.

Daly and Ana Claudia Chacin spoke on the Anti-Social podcast about what motivated them to dig into Olea’s past. They also talked about and how today’s climate where victims of sexual assault are more likely to be heard helped two women to break their decade-long silence and come forward to police with allegations of sexual assault by Oscar Olea.

Olea, who coached at Flipout Workout and once held lessons at the Community Center and on the Village Green, has not been charged with any crime and has denied any wrongdoing.

The Key Biscayne Police, Miami-Dade Police’s Special Victims Unit and the State Attorney determined last year that reports of inappropriate behavior with a 4-year and 7-year-old student did not warrant criminal charges against Olea.

The Herald stories came on the heels of the arrest of attorney William McCaughan Jr. in Key Biscayne on child pornography charges. An online petition is circulating with nearly 600 signatures demanding the Village of Key Biscayne hold a town hall on whether children are safe on the island, among other related issues.
